Types of Asphalt Roofing

Asphalt roof shingles are best for houses with roofs with steep slopes, because water drains off more efficiently, eliminating ponding and standing water issues.

Asphalt shingles can match your home decor, as well. They can be shaped to complement your house’s style. The color palette, though limited to mineral tones like gray, black, beige, and even a bluish-green shade, can be applied in a pattern that creates a pleasing curb appeal. There are several types to choose from:

Organic Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are mass-produced, making them the least expensive option, as far as installation goes. A roof covered in asphalt shingles lasts about 20 years, if properly maintained and if damaged sections have been repaired promptly.

Organic asphalt shingles have a paper backing, making them lightweight and easily installed. Though they are thicker and heavier than fiberglass asphalt shingles as they have more asphalt coating. They are also more prone to warping over time.

Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles can also be made with fiberglass, making them more fire-resistant than organic asphalt shingles. Because of the additional fire resistance, fiberglass asphalt shingles have longer warranties. They work well in warmer climates but are not as durable in colder climates—sustained low temperatures can damage the shingles.

Shingle Shapes

Asphalt roof shingles come in two basic shapes. Three-tab shingles have the appearance of being three separate one-foot shingles but are, in fact, one three-foot-long shingle. They are the most popular shingle shape and are the better shape for low-sloping roofs.

Architectural shingles are the same size as three-tab shingles but do not have tabs. Instead, they have an additional asphalt layer at the bottom edge of the shingle, which improves water resistance and gives a more dimensional look to the roof, as opposed to the three-tab shingles, which tend to have a flat appearance.

Asphalt Shingles Repairs

Asphalt roofing is less expensive than other roofing alternatives but is not as durable, so you can expect to have higher maintenance costs due to more frequent maintenance calls.

Severe temperatures can compromise the integrity of the shingles, as well.

If you notice leaks or drips, or the shingles aren’t flexible anymore, call our team at Maycon Construction Services. One of our roofing experts will do a complete inspection to determine the extent of the damage and develop a maintenance plan to extend the life of your asphalt roof shingles. You should inspect your asphalt roof shingles at least once a year. Be on the lookout for:

  • Missing, cracked or curled shingles
  • Dark spots or shingles that appear wet
  • An increase in granules in your gutters
  • Signs of wear, especially around chimneys and other openings
  • Moss or algae

Asphalt Shingles Replacement

If your asphalt roof has sustained severe damage, it may not be cost-effective to repair.

Replacing shingles may be relatively easy, but if the damage spreads across the roof or the shingles have grown algae or mold, replacement will be your best option.

One cost-benefit of fiberglass asphalt shingles is that, with certain conditions, they can be applied directly on top of an existing asphalt shingle roof, eliminating the removal cost, as long as there is only one existing layer. If there are two or more layers of asphalt shingles on the roof, the existing layers should be removed before the fiberglass asphalt shingles.

Architectural shingles cost more than three-tab shingles because they are thicker and heavier. The added thickness increases durability, extending the life of a roof with architectural shingles to 30 years or more.
